The past few weeks have seen DeepSeek take the world by storm. The Chinese AI firm's chatbot overtook OpenAI's ChatGPT on the App Store. DeepSeek claims responses from its DeepSeek-R1 model rival other large language models like OpenAI's GPT-4o and o1. While producing comparable results, its training cost is reported to be a fraction of other LLMs. The rise of DeepSeek has shaken up the AI race and brought China at the forefront of the technology. Governments, however, have expressed data privacy and security concerns about the Chinese chatbot. Italy blocked the app on both Apple and Android storefronts and the company may face further regulatory actions in Europe.
