Asus took us quite by surprise when it introduced the quirky and unique ScreenPad on its flagship 2018 laptops, the ZenBook Pro 14 and ZenBook Pro 15. The company effectively replaced the standard trackpads on these laptops with fully interactive touchscreens. The idea was to retain all the functionality of a standard trackpad but also open up completely new ways to use a laptop. We had a lot of thoughts about the concept and execution of the ScreenPad idea – not all positive. While there was a lot of potential, it seemed as though Asus had failed to strike the right balance between usability and innovation.
Asus VivoBook S15 (S532) Summary
The latest Asus VivoBook S15 (S532) features the ambitious ScreenPad 2.0, a refined version of the hybrid trackpad we first saw on 2018's flagship ZenBook Pro (UX580). This touchscreen device lets you use a few handy tools and run Windows apps as if it's a second screen. That does conflict with its primary duty as a trackpad sometimes but it's possible to get used to the quirks of the design and implementation.
Beyond this, the VivoBook S15 weighs just 1.8kg. The full-HD IPS panel is somewhat disappointing in terms of colour reproduction and vibrancy. Battery life is good enough to get you through a full workday. You can choose between a 10th Gen Intel Core i7 and Core i5 processor, but both versions feature an Nvidia GeForce MX250 GPU, 8GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD. The specifications are up-to-date but we would have liked more high-speed USB ports - you get only one Type-A and one Type-C USB 3.1 port each, while the other two are USB 2.0.
Performance is good enough for general productivity but don't expect to play heavy games or content creation applications. If you want a laptop that feels innovative and fresh, this will do the trick, but you can get more power or slicker looks at this price.
