If you've recently purchased an Apple TV, beware of a potential issue in your device. Apple has begun to contact select customers that purchased the third-generation of its media streaming device to inform them about a faulty part. The company is offering a free exchange to the affected customers, shipping them brand new units.

Affected customers are also given FedEx labels along with their new Apple TV unit, and if customers use them to send back their faulty Apple TV units, they will get an iTunes Gift Card.

Interestingly, the company hasn't posted about the issue on its website but instead is contacting select customers individually. This suggests that the issue is not affecting a large number of customers. MacRumors first reported about receiving an email from the company.

"Our defective Apple TV was purchased just a few weeks ago, and other affected customers are likely to have purchased their devices in a similar time-frame," the site reported.

This isn't the first time Apple has recalled some Apple TVs due to a hardware fault. In 2013, the company started a replacement program after discovering Wi-Fi issues in its media streaming device. This time, however, the company hasn't specified which component is faulty in the recalled Apple TVs.

Considering it is only contacting customers who just recently purchased the device, the issue seems to have occurred in one of the company's recent batches. Which is not uncommon as companies often swap components with an improved counterpart in their hardware products even months after the first launch of the device.

No faulty Apple TV has been reported in India so far. The Apple TV (third-generation) is officially available in India for Rs. 5,900. According to several reports, the company will release a new Apple TV on September 9.
