Apple has acquired app search and discovery service Chomp for an undisclosed amount. The acquisition was initially reported by Techncrunch and later confirmed by Apple via AllThingsD.

With over half a million apps in the App Store, finding quality apps can be a challenge. Chomp aims to solve this problem via simplified search. For example, if you search for "kids games", Chomp will probably show up more relevant results than the App Store search itself. The acquisition is clearly a signal that Chomp is app search and discovery done right.

Expect Chomp to be integrated into the App Store soon. The team is already at work within Apple. 9to5Mac reports that Chomp CEO Ben Keighran has joined the iTunes marketing team while CTO Cathy Edwards is now a Senior iTunes Engineer.

Chomp started as an iPhone app discovery service in January 2010. It expanded to the Android platform in February 2011. In addition to the website, Chomp offers native apps for both platforms. Future of the Android part of the service remains unclear post the acquisition.
