In a press statement, Apple said the investment in the Hyderabad office will help the company accelerate the development of its Maps offering, and will create up to 4,000 jobs. The company added that the new facility will be located on the Waverock campus, and will be a world-class, LEED-certified home for the Maps team.

Apple CEO Tim Cook in the prepared statement spoke about the initiative, "Apple is focused on making the best products and services in the world and we are thrilled to open this new office in Hyderabad which will focus on Maps development. The talent here in the local area is incredible and we are looking forward to expanding our relationships and introducing more universities and partners to our platforms as we scale our operations."

Apple's Maps offering began with an embarrassing start, but has slowly become a much more used service for iOS and OS X users. The company says over the past few years it has been updating and adding several new features to Maps, from 3D views to Flyover and Transit.
