Sony has announced the launch of a new mirrorless camera NEX-5R.

The camera comes with a APS-C type (23.5 x15.6 mm) Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor with 16.1 effective megapixels teamed with the BIONZ image processor and an ISO range of ISO 100-25600 for still images.

The Sony NEX-5R comes with a touchscreen that flips through 180 degrees for easy arm's length self-portraits. Other features include full-HD video recording.

At launch, Fast Hybrid AF will support these lenses: E 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 OSS; E 55-210mm F4-6.3 OSS; E 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 OSS; E 24mm F1.8ZA Sonnar T*. Firmware upgrades will expand the range of lenses offering Fast Hybrid AF support.

An interesting feature of the camera is the ability to download new features with PlayMemories Camera Apps. While details aren't clear, it seems Sony is offering the ability to download apps straight onto this Wi-Fi enabled camera. The word 'Android' did not feature anywhere in Sony's press release.

Wi-Fi also brings other features like ability to transfer photos and videos wirelessly to any smartphone or tablet that's running the free PlayMemories Mobile app. Alternatively, you can transfer the photos directly to a networked PC, simplifying image back-ups without having to fiddle with memory cards or connecting cables.

Photos stored on the NEX-5R can also be enjoyed directly on any DLNA-compatible TV, with no HDMI cable needed. Share via your wireless access point, or bypass your router and send pictures straight from the camera to TVs supporting Wi-Fi Direct.

The camera will release in mid-October for $750 with the standard 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens or $650 for just the body.
