While the Wii U hasn't been as big a success as its predecessor the Wii was, there are more than enough games to keep fans and newcomers interested. Not all of them use the much touted tablet-styled controller except as a smaller screen to play your game on, but these are still great games to have. Here's a list of all the games that you absolutely need to play on Nintendo's newest - and arguably greatest - home console.

1. Mario Kart 8
A staple on every Nintendo console since the Super Nintendo, the Mario Kart series has gone from strength to strength. Mario Kart 8 features gorgeous tracks ranging from the usual mix of castles and cityscapes, and interstellar classics like Rainbow Road. Everything from the visuals to the sound do a great job of making the action come alive. The production values are stunning to say the least.

Coupled with slick controls and downloadable content that's actually worth a purchase, you get a kart racing game that's going to be played till the end of days. Or at least until the eventual sequel.

2. Super Smash Bros for Wii U
Smash Bros is what happens when the fine people at Nintendo decide to pit its classic characters against each other in a fighting game. From stalwarts like Mario to more obscure ones like Ness from the EarthBound, there's a lot to choose from. Each character has its own unique set of moves and there are a slew of levels to punch it out in.

While Super Smash Bros is available on the 3DS as well, we prefer the Wii U version due to its long list of supported controllers, from the Wii U gamepad all the way to the now ancient GameCube controller. You can also use the 3DS itself as a controller by using a $1 app on the Nintendo eShop, or without it if you also have the game on the 3DS.

3. Rayman Legends
Rayman Legends was supposed to be a Wii U exclusive. However Ubisoft delayed the Wii U version to release it for the PS3, Xbox 360, Vita and PC as well, and followed it up with a release on the PS4 and Xbox One.

However, the Wii U version is still the one worth playing over all others thanks to the fantastic integration of touchscreen controls that makes it a lot more immersive than the other versions of the game. Throw in the games amazing music sections and running from dragons and towering infernos becomes all the more eventful.

4. Super Mario 3D World
Inventive levels and amazing power-ups make this sixth original 3D platformer in the Super Mario series a joy to play. There are a host of characters to choose from, both single and multiplayer modes, and responsive controls.

The high definition graphics and infectious sound track elevate it to the very zenith of platforming goodness.

5. ZombiU
This debut Wii U effort from Ubisoft still holds up rather well largely due to smart gameplay mechanics. The game has you as a survivor during a zombie apocalypse. On dying (and you will die, a lot), you'll take on the role of a different survivor instead of just restarting at a checkpoint.

That means that in order to get the gear and weapons you were carrying before you last died, you have to find and kill your old character, who's been turned into a deadly zombie. There's astute use of the Wii U GamePad to let you hack and snipe too, which makes this game really stand out.
