The full version of Final Fantasy XV is not out for another six months, which is why Square Enix decided to give players a peek by releasing a demo at its Uncovered event in Los Angeles on Wednesday night. The demo is available for free for owners of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

"This storyline is unique to the demo and will not be available in the final version of the main game," the company said in a statement. "Players can take control of young Noctis as he masters various weapons, magic skills, and driving. To overcome the many monsters within this fantastical dream world, young Noctis will have Carbuncle as is his magical guide. Players who complete the demo will unlock the exclusive Carbuncle summon DLC for the full game at launch."

That's a very strange demo, truth be told, as it tells a completely different story compared to its main game. Honestly, it sounds more like a prequel - the same way 2014's first-person survival game P.T. was supposed to be for the cancelled Silent Hill game. Final Fantasy XV is unlikely to suffer from a similar fate, and is scheduled to release on September 30.

Square also announced a five-part anime series that tells the story of Noctis and how he became friends with his three comrades, which will be released in the run up to FFXV's release. The story of that anime series ties into the demo, Square Enix said.
