  • The Nintendo NX will be revealed this year
  • Not all developers will have access to its developer tools
  • This could see fewer games on the platform

While Nintendo has been quiet on what to expect from the Nintendo NX console, a developer relations representative for the company's European division has reconfirmed that details will hit this year.

According to a post spotted by Redittor GamoTron21, Nintendo of Europe representative Ulysse Richert-Botté stated that Nintendo will publicly share more information about the NX within the year.

"You already mentioned the one information we have: Nintendo will publicly share more information about the NX within this year," he said.

His post went on to outline that smaller developers would possibly be out of luck in getting access to developer tools.

"What this will mean for the disclosure of technical information is yet to be decided. When we opened this Nintendo Developer Portal, our goal was to provide the same amount of technical information to small and big companies, and even individuals, for existing platforms: Wii U and 3DS. Whether or not that will be the case for the NX, we cannot promise," his post reads.

The reason for this is due to the instability of the NX's developer tools which could be a major pain point for many if released in such a state he claimed.

"Sharing them with a lot of people too early would have created a lot of support work for Nintendo and frustration for developers, so they were shared openly pretty late. So, if this launch goes the same as previous ones, I would suggest to be patient."

Considering that indie developers haven't had the best of relationships with Nintendo, this should come as no surprise. Of late we've seen Microsoft and Sony woo smaller developers to their platforms alongside Steam. Nintendo's caution, while warranted, could impact it in the long term. Given how poorly the Wii U has sold, another dismal showing could impact its future as a games company altogether.
