During Epic Games' Unreal Engine briefing session at the Game Developers Conference 2015 (GDC 2015), Nvidia's CEO, Jen-Hsun Huang dropped in as a special guest to announce the company's next high performance video card, the GeForce GTX Titan X.

Fresh from announcing the Shield Android TV-powered console, Huang said the GeForce GTX Titan X sports a 12GB VRAM and is made of around eight billion transistors. It's based on the Maxwell architecture that powers the popular GTX 970 video card. Maxwell improves upon its predecessors Kepler and Fermi in terms of not only performance, but also power efficiency.

While eight billion transistors might seem like an enormous achievement, it's similar to the first GTX Titan and the Titan Black. Both had 7.1 billion transistors each. It looks likes its predecessors too, sporting a familiar metal cooler and fan shroud. Aside from this, Nvidia was rather coy with specifications for the GTX Titan X. Though you can expect more information on it at the company's GPU Technology Conference in a couple of weeks.

Considering the lack of competition in the graphics card space at the moment, it will be interesting to see how Nvidia price the GeForce GTX Titan X. Of even greater interest will be of how AMD responds to this latest salvo from Nvidia what with a rumoured Radeon 300 series announcement on the horizon.
