  • The sound of opening a beer bottle powers Overwatch's hit sound effect.
  • The reason for this is to make each hit feel "satisfying".
  • The source of this is the game's art book.

One of the more satisfying sounds in first-person shooters is the sound made when you hit an opponent. The same rings true for Overwatch. While our initial impressions of the game are positive, it appears that its hit sound effect is that of opening beer bottle of all things. The news comes via the visual source book that comes with the Overwatch Collector's Edition.

"Another extremely challenging sound is the "hit-pip." When you hit someone, you need to know you made contact. The sound needs to cut through the mix but not feel like it comes from any hero. It went through tons of iteration. Finally, one night I thought, " It should be satisfying to hit an enemy." Just think about what's satisfying: beer. So I literally opened a beer bottle. pssht. The sound is reversed and tweaked a little, but that sound is our hit-pip," reads a post on Reddit that quotes the relevant section in its entirety.

While Blizzard is known for its superb sound design, its interesting to know what the source of its hit sound is. It makes us wonder what inspired some of the game's other aural effects. Still not as weird as how Riot Games recorded League of Legends character Zac's squishing sound.
