In October, Valve announced that the company will be releasing an update for its Steam client that will provide it with full configuration of the DualShock 4 controller. Now, with the latest update to its client, the company has finally provided it with Steam Configuration support for the PS4 controller, including the use of touchpad as well as gyroscope.

This effectively means that all of PS4 DualShock 4 controller's buttons, its touchpad, the joysticks etc. can now be assigned to particular functions inside the Steam client. The company has clarified that the PS4 controller will have access to all those APIs that Steam's own controller has access to.

"When enabled, PS4 controllers will have access to the same sort of customization/configuration support as Steam Controllers, including native API support. PS4 Controllers using this system can map the trackpad, gyro, buttons, etc. to keyboard, mouse, or x-input outputs and can make use of action sets, touch menus, radial menus, and so forth," Valve said in its release note.

The Steam client update further brings along support for the LED colour lighting in the controllers and allows users to change the colour or adjust the brightness from the app itself. Valve has added a new mode called "Joystick Mouse" with the latest update. "This is a joystick based mouse control useful for stick based controllers," the company said. The support for the controller can be enabled from the Big Picture settings inside the app.

"Individual games can opt out of using Steam Configuration support for the PS4 controller under each game's Controller Settings. If a game has native PS4 support this allows it to continue to be recognised directly," Valve said in its post.
