Highlights
  • Buying furniture isn't an option for everyone
  • Renting furniture is better for those who shift homes frequently
  • Some of these sites let you rent appliances, gadgets too

Buying furniture and appliances may not always be the best idea. If you’re short on cash, or shifting homes every few months, you might want to rent these things instead. If the summer’s becoming unbearable, you can easily rent an AC for around Rs. 1,500 to Rs. 2,000 per month, instead of shelling out upwards of Rs. 20,000 to buy a new AC. Clearly, the deal is good enough for some people.

The good news is that you don’t have to go out to find stores that allow you to rent these items anymore. There are several websites that let you rent beds, dressing tables, or even washing machines. Some of them own these items, while others act as middlemen and get these items from the store to you.

While renting may seem like a great option for some people, there are some things you need to watch out for. One of these is a security deposit — even though they’re online businesses, some of these companies ask for a cheque to pay this. There are other practical considerations such as whether the appliance needs a stabiliser and whether the renting company will help you out with repairs in case the appliance stops working. We found a bunch of websites that let you rent furniture and appliances, and you can see which one works for you.

1. Furlenco
Available in: Bengaluru, Delhi, Gurgaon, Mumbai, Pune
Furlenco claims it restores all items to mint condition before letting you rent these. Each item has a monthly rental fee and a minimum term for rent, so for example a wardrobe could be available for a minimum duration of three months. The company covers damages up to Rs. 10,000, offers one free cleaning and one free relocation service as part of the package.

The pick-up and drop of all items is free, with delivery promised in up to seven days. Furlenco offers basics such as a sofa for Rs. 799 per month, a refrigerator and washing machine at Rs. 2,000 per month, and an interesting combo — a 32-inch TV, sofa, and a floor lamp — at Rs. 2,350 per month. Furlenco charges one month’s rent as deposit.

2. Rentomojo
Available in: Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Gurgaon, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Noida, Pune
Rentomojo asks for a token deposit amount of Rs. 500 and lets you rent all essential kinds of furniture and appliances. Among the platforms we’ve listed, Rentomojo is the one with the widest coverage in terms of number of cities it services. It covers normal wear and tear but charges you for damage that makes the product unusable. It also offers a free maintenance and relocation service.

You can rent a wardrobe for Rs. 749 per month, a double bed for Rs. 1,089 per month, and TV, washing machine, and fridge combo at Rs. 3,737 per month. These prices are for a three-month holding period. The price decreases significantly if you commit to a longer holding period, so if you can rent these for two years, you end up paying around half the price every month.

3. SabRentKaro
Available in: Bengaluru, Delhi, Hyderabad, and Vishakapatnam
SabRentKaro operates on a marketplace model, where anyone can list their gadgets, furniture, and even bikes for rent. The site simply charges a 5 percent handling fee on all rentals. While on the website you can see claims of excellent customer service, but we’d always advise caution when renting in a marketplace model. Just as not all sellers on Flipkart and Amazon are great, not all renters will be excellent either. The pricing varies a lot since it is a marketplace. Sometimes prices are higher than what other sites offer, but there are other times when the price is lower. The security deposit varies too.

SabRentKaro also has a program called Rent2Own, where you can rent things for the long-term, and after the renting period is complete, you own the item. It sounds a lot like buying things on EMI, with a little less risk in case you decide later that you don’t want to buy the item.

4. Rentmacha
Available in: Mumbai
Rentmacha’s inventory isn’t massive and it operates only in Mumbai, but if you're in the city, there are some plenty good options on this platform. It has a standard 3-month minimum renting tenure, and reduces rates if you rent for longer. There’s no option to purchase the items you are renting. You pay a “token amount” as security deposit, according to the company’s website.

We spotted a bedroom package comprising a bed, mattress, bedside rack, and a wardrobe available at Rs. 1,499 per month, and the rate reduces if you rent for longer than three months. An AC is available at Rs. 1,399 per month, while a washing machine costs Rs. 1,299 per month.

There are some other sites such as Grabonrent (Bengaluru and Hyderabad), Rentone (Mumbai and Pune), Cityfurnish (Bengaluru, Delhi-NCR, and Pune), and Voko (Delhi and Gurgaon) that let you rent furniture and appliances. Most of these businesses operate on a similar model. If you have used any of them, or any other similar platform, be sure to share your experience with us and the other readers, via the comments.
