The search giant on Tuesday has integrated a new 'Suggested for you' section to Google News, aimed at offering stories that match the user's interest.
Announcing the new "Suggested for you" feature via Google+ post on Tuesday, Google News Founder Krishna Bharat said, "The goal is to surface narrow and local topics specific to you. You can tweak by saying 'Not interested' until it's more to your liking. The topics and stories shown here will change with the news, to keep things fresh and serendipitous."
Bharat also posted a screenshot the 'Suggested for you' section being shown to him, which clearly shows below each article the reason for showing the story as, "You said you were interested in: Topic", followed by the option to click "Not interested" to remove that topic from future suggestions.
As yet, the 'Suggested for you' section seems to be rolling out gradually globally. User in several different regions report they are seeing the new section in their Google News feed, however, the NDTV Gadgets team isn't seeing it yet in India.
Also on Tuesday, Google announced a new search label that will show up in mobile search results and let users know which result is well-optimised for smartphones and tablets.
"Starting today, to make it easier for people to find the information that they're looking for, we're adding a 'mobile-friendly' label to our mobile search results," confirmed Google's Webmaster Central Blog post. The new label will roll out globally in the coming weeks.
Google adds that webpages will be eligible for the 'mobile-friendly' label if they avoid software that is not common on mobile devices (like Flash); use correctly sized and properly optimised text that is readable without zooming; resize content according to the user's display so that one doesn't have to scroll horizontally or zoom for ideal viewing; and place links far enough apart so that the one the user intends to tap can be easily reached.
