Google will release the next build of Android OS - thought to be the recently spotted Android 5.1 Lollipop - in March, as per an HTC executive.

According to HTC's VP of Product Management, Mo Versi, a maintenance release (MR) update for Android is due from Google in March, hinting the Mountain View giant may release Android 5.1 Lollipop, a build we have recently seen in new Android One smartphones launched in Indonesia, Nepal, and Sri Lanka.

Replying to a HTC One (M7) GPE (Google Play Edition) user about a fix for a button lights bug, Versi tweeted saying that "It'll be tied to Google's next MR, which is in March."

So far, Google hasn't officially announced anything about Android 5.1, and the changes it is expected to bring to the OS. All we have seen is some tipped changes from the Android One smartphone running Android 5.1 Lollipop in purported live images, which include tweaked quick settings toggles for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, an added arrow sign which on tapping opens up a list without leaving the quick settings, and more.

In December, a purported changelog was leaked online claiming that two separate sources from Google have confirmed the changes. Then the Android 5.1 Lollipop changelog had included the return of silent mode, apart from a number of improvements and fixes for system availability, RAM, battery management, excessive consumption of network devices used Wi-Fi, wireless connection issue, OK Google issue, and other minor changes and bug fixes.

The Android 5.1 Lollipop build has also been spotted running on Nexus devices, with build number LMY29C on the Nexus 5, LMY22E on the Nexus 9, and LMY29C, LMY29D and LMY22E on the Nexus 6.

With a few Nexus devices already running the OS version, it was and still can be speculated that the Google will announce the official factory images and OTA updates for the Nexus lineup soon, which could be March - as Versi points out.
