Are we looking at pictures of the new iPhone?

Japanese site iLab has stumbled upon what look like pictures of the iPhone 4S successor. The images show the iPhone assembly in various stages, including very clear pictures of the front and back of the phone.

The new iPhone looks very similar to the iPhone 4S. From the images it seems, as rumoured, it is just as wide as the current iPhone, but the length has been extended a bit. The FaceTime camera has been moved form the side of the ear piece to right above. The left side of the phone remains unchanged, with the volume buttons and the mute/ orientation lock slider switch.

The top just features the power switch, as the headphone jack has been moved to the bottom left. The bottom side of the phone also features the smaller dock connector, engulfed on either side by what is a rather un-Apple looking speaker grill. The grill is reminiscent of the speakers on the old Powerbook G4 is the one element that puts the authenticity of the images in doubt.

The back is done in two colours, with black bands at the top and bottom engulfing a giant grey area that has Apple logo and the text 'iPhone' at their usual positions. The back also features what looks too-big-to-be-a-noise-cancelling-microphone-but-probably-is, in-between the camera and the flash.

While the images look very genuine, aside from the few oddities highlighted earlier, one can never be sure what a new Apple device will look like until it is officially unveiled.
