Blackphone unveiled, a security-focused Android smartphone due at MWC 2014

Geeksphone, a Spanish smartphone maker, along with Silent Circle, an encrypted communications firm, has announced it will introduce a smartphone at the upcoming Mobile World Congress 2014 event in Barcelona that will be focussed only on the privacy of the users. The company is calling the device the Blackphone.

"Blackphone is the world's first smartphone to put privacy and control ahead of everything else," states the website.

The Blackphone powered by a customised version of Android made by the company in association with Silent Circle, called PrivatOS. The OS will allow the user to make and receive secure calls, send encrypted text messages, store files securely and browse the web through an anonymous VPN.

According to Geeksphone, the Blackphone will be powered by a 'top performing' processor and a cellular module that is said to be compatible with any GSM network, and free of geographical restrictions.

The specifications and other features are not yet known for the handset. According to the official website, "Performance benchmarks put it among the top performers from any manufacturer."

The pre-orders for Blackphone will start on the same day when it will be launched at MWC 2014, according to the official website.

Phil Zimmermann, one of the creators for Blackphone stated, "I have spent my whole career working towards the launch of secure telephony products. Blackphone provides you with everything you need to ensure privacy and control of your communications, along with all the other high-end smartphone features you have come to expect."
