Highlights
  • Rubin shared the teaser image of smartphone earlier this week
  • Schmidt said "phenomenal" choices coming for Android users soon
  • The teaser image showed partial display of the device

Earlier this week, Android co-founder Andy Rubin shared the first glimpse of his company Essential's near bezel-less display smartphone and even though the teaser image didn't even reveal full display of the device, it appeared to be running some version of Android. Now, Eric Schmidt, Alphabet's Executive Chairman, has confirmed that the device will be running Android after all.

In a tweet on Wednesday, Schmidt shared Andy Rubin's teaser image and said, "Phenomenal new choices for Android users coming very soon. An example!" It shouldn't come as a surprise that the phone being developed by the co-founder of Android is using the platform but now there is official confirmation that the smartphone will be competing against the likes of Samsung and Pixel instead of opting for another platform altogether.

Rubin shared the first picture of the device on the Twitter on Monday with caption: "I'm really excited about how this is shaping up. Eager to get it in more people's hands..." As promised earlier by Rubin in January, the device does appear to have a near bezel-less display but also a cut-out at the top of the screen, assumedly for speakers.

We will have to wait for further information from Rubin or from Essential to get the details about the specifications as well as availability of the device but its first look certainly reminds us of Xiaomi's Mi MIX smartphone, which created waves in the tech world last year for its near bezel-less display.
