  • Coolpad Mega 2.5D was launched for as low as Rs. 6,999

Gionee has sent out press invites for an event on August 22 in India. The invite bears the hashtag #SelfieWithFlash, hinting that the company will launch a new smartphone in the Indian market.

The Chinese smartphone manufacturer is widely expected to launch a selfie-centric smartphone in its S-series lineup. This month, other Chinese OEMs like Oppo and Coolpad have launched selfie-focused smartphones in India, and it looks like Gionee wants to follow the same path. Just to recap, Oppo launched the Oppo F1s for Rs. 17,999, while CoolPad launched the Coolpad Mega 2.5D for as low as Rs. 6,999.

Gionee in the recent past hasn't unveiled any smartphone that's particularly selfie-focused, but several in its lineup do ship with beautification features for selfies. At an event in Beijing last month, the Gionee had launched two new smartphones Gionee M6 and M6 Plus, bearing data encryption chips and massive batteries. The Gionee M6 is priced at CNY 2,699 (roughly Rs. 27,200) for its 64GB storage variant, and CNY 2,899 (roughly Rs. 29,200) for the 128GB storage variant. The Gionee M6 Plus 64GB variant is priced at CNY 2,999 (roughly Rs. 30,200), and the 128GB variant is priced at CNY 3,199 (roughly Rs. 32,200).

The smartphones were unveiled in Champagne Gold and Mocha Gold colour options, and were seen running on Android Marshmallow-based Amigo 3.5 OS. It features a 5.5-inch full HD (1920x1080 pixels) Amoled display, a 64-bit 1.8GHz MediaTek Helio P10 octa-core processor paired with 4GB RAM, a 13-megapixel rear camera, 8-megapixel selfie camera, and a huge 5000mAh battery.
