  • Xiaomi joins Wireless Power Consortium known for Qi standard
  • The list includes Apple, Samsung, Nokia and Google among others
  • Xiaomi Mi 7 could support wireless charging

Chinese electronics maker Xiaomi is now a member of the Wireless Power Consortium that is known for its Qi wireless charging standard. This adds the company in the same list as Apple, Samsung, and LG among others that support the Qi wireless standard. Although Xiaomi has not official announced it, the consortium lists the company as one of its members.

Major smartphone makers have been shifting towards wireless charging with Apple being the most recent example with the launch of the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X. Companies like Nokia, Samsung, and Google have had wireless charging for a few years now that support the Qi standard, but the technology is still in its initial stages.

Xiaomi's addition to the list suggests that an upcoming flagship may support wireless charging, presumably the Mi 7, which is tipped to release in Q1 2018. So far, the little that we now about the Mi 7 there seems to be no indication of wireless charging yet. But Xiaomi has always been competitive when it comes to challenging giants like Apple and Samsung so it is likely we will see something regarding wireless charging support now that it has been listed under Wireless Power Consortium.

Earlier this month, the first rumours about next year's Mi 7 surfaced online that suggest the upcoming Mi 7 could sport the yet-to-be-announced Snapdragon 845 SoC and a 6-inch full-HD AMOLED display. As we move closer to the launch of the Mi 7 next year, we may start hearing something along the lines of wireless charging support.
