Samsung has hired Luc Julia, an engineer who lead the team responsible for the development of Apple's Siri voice-based personal assistant technology, as vice president at its innovation lab in Menlo Park, California.

Julia is working on the Samsung Architecture for Multimodal Interactions project (or SAMI), according to a report by Macworld.

He was the director of the Siri project for 10 months before departing from Apple, last year.

The SAMI project is focused on the "Internet of things" and intends to be a platform offering the ability to collect data from connected devices including wearable devices like fitness bands, allowing the data to be utilised by other devices. Samsung is working with about 50 companies to develop and test SAMI including fitness band maker Fitbit, smartwatch maker Pebble, Withings and Vital Connect.

The report elaborates that Samsung started working on the project about six months ago, so it's still in early stages as the lab usually works on "three- to-five-year projects," according to Julia.

The platform is being made for use by companies making wearable computer devices, home automation devices and automobiles, for developing additional services for their users.

As per the report, SAMI will have the capability to collect and store data from any device in its original format. Samsung will "normalise" the data and make it available as a feed that can be consumed by other applications, according to Julia.

The SAMI project also allows a voice interaction interface similar to Siri, and collects data from different services to offer them through a single app, as noted by the report.
