Week in review: Ultrabooks and Google goggles

  • A look back at the week's top stories - ultrabooks, Google goggles and more.

This was the week of ultrabooks. Wipro kicked things off by unveiling India's thinnest ultrabook. HP joined the game and finally, Samsung anounnced two ultrabooks of its own.

Sticking with new products, Acer launched the first Intel Cedar Trail powered netbook while Bose showcased two systems featuring a new soundbar. Airtel's mobile money went nationwide (see facts and analysis) and BSNL gunned for the Aakash tablet with three tablets of its own (also see: Has the battery run out on Aakash tablet?). On the software side, everyone's favourite media-player, VLC, saw v2.0 being released. Next week is expected to see the launch of a cheaper Windows smartphone by Nokia.

Talking about Microsoft, Windows lost the iconic four-colour logo while Microsoft asked EU antitrust regulators to intervene in a patent dispute with Google and Motorola. Rumours indicating that Microsoft Office is coming to iPad also did the rounds.

It seemed the endgame in Apple's legal woes in China was near, with suggestions that Proview was ready to talk, only for the trouble to emerge closer home.

A good week for Android users with cloud storage service competing for their attention. Dropbox's new app auto-uploads photos, videos while Box responded by offering 50 GB free storage to all Android users. More good news for Android fans with Samsung announcing that Galaxy S II sales had topped 20 million.

Google's googles made quite a wave while Google tried to give Google+ usage yet another push.
