Apple may launch the iPad mini 5 in the first half of this year, according to a report

Apple is expected to launch new iPad models in the first half of 2019, according to several rumours floating around. Apple is expected to launch a new smaller iPad variant, likely to be called iPad mini 5. Fresh speculations point towards the iPad mini 5 borrowing its design from the iPad mini 4. The iPad mini 5 is likely to carry dimensions similar to the iPad mini 4, including the same 7.9-inch display provided the bezels remain the same.

According to a Japanese blog, Macotakara, the iPad mini 5 may end up look looking similar to the iPad mini 4. The blog cites accessory makers as its sources for the information. According to them, the iPad mini 5 will be 6.1mm thick and will come with a Lightning port, Touch ID, and the good old 3.5mm headphone jack.

However, the blog claims that the rear microphone will be moved to the top-centre position, just like the sixth-generation iPad 9.7-inch. It's still unclear which chip will power the iPad mini 5. The 2017 iPad Pro models use Apple's A10X Fusion chip while the sixth-generation iPad 9.7-inch uses the A10 Fusion chip.

To recall, previous rumours had pointed towards Apple launching an iPad mini 5 along with a new affordable iPad in the first half of 2019. The iPad mini is certainly due for a refresh as the iPad mini 4 was launched way back in 2015. Earlier, a leaked iPad mini 5 case revealed key design details of the upcoming tablet.

The iPad mini 5 is expected to sport a vertically stacked dual camera setup. Popular analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had earlier predicted that the iPad mini 5 could launch in spring 2019 with an affordable display panel.

Meanwhile, Apple's supply chain partners in Taiwan are suffering from disappointing iPhone sales, reports Digitimes. Flexible board suppliers including Zhen Ding Tech, Flexium Interconnect, and Career Technology are said to be bracing for worse results in 2019.

Digitimes further says that with the launch of the new iPad models in the first half of 2019, Taiwan-based flexible PCB suppliers are likely to improve on shipment performances. But, new iPhone models in 2019 will have a much bigger impact on these suppliers' performances.
