Videocon removes roaming charges on incoming calls

There have been talks regarding making roaming free in India for quite some time now. Videocon Mobile Services has announced free incoming calls on its network while on roaming. The customers will not have to get any special recharge done to avail this benefit.

However, on roaming the users will have to shell out Re.1 per minute for a local call and Rs. 1.5 per minute for an STD call. Both local and STD SMS charges while on roaming will be Rs. 3.45 per SMS. While data consumption charges will be 10paise per 10kb.

As per data by COAI, Videocon Mobiles Services had a subscriber base of 2.06 million by February 2013. It is offering services in seven telecom circles.

It is noteworthy that Aircel too had launched a similar initiative in January 2013. The product was dubbed as 'One Nation, One Rate' and claimed to offer one rate for Voice, SMS and Data in home circles and on roaming. However, one had to get a special recharge done to avail the benefits under this scheme.

This special recharge is available in different denomination for different circle, for example in Delhi NCR this recharge costs Rs. 39 and is valid for 30 days. In Aircel's case too subscribers had to be on Aircel network while roaming to be able to enjoy these special rates.

Commenting on the occasion, Arvind Bali, Director and CEO, Videocon Mobile Services said, "We aim at being a country free of any physical or geographical boundaries, and in pursuance of the visionary recommendations as underlined in the National Telecom Policy 2012, we reiterate our commitment towards 'One Nation - Free Roaming'. To extend the benefits of freedom of movement across our Network, we have introduced this offering where our subscribers roaming across Videocon Network will stand to benefit from free incoming calls. There are no strings attached to the proposition, no STVs/recharges required. This is yet another 'Industry first' by Videocon and we are committed to our mantra of providing something "Extra" to our customers always.
