Screenwriter Aaron Sorkin's Steve Jobs biopic, the production of which began last month, has now got an official release date, revealed by film studio Universal Pictures.

The firm has announced that the much-discussed and long-delayed movie, which was in the news last year for the number of Hollywood actors who reportedly turned down offers to play the Apple co-founder, will hit theatres this year on October 9.

The release date was tweeted by CNBC Now on Thursday, "JUST IN: Universal Pictures says the Steve Jobs movie will be released on Friday, October 9, 2015," mentioned the tweet.

Starring Michael Fassbender as the late Apple co-founder, Steve Jobs, and Seth Rogen as Steve Wozniak, the movie started filming around the Flint Center at De Anza College in Cupertino, California. It is worth noting that Apple introduced its first Macintosh computer at the venue in 1984. Notably, Fassbender was reportedly the third actor approached for the role, after Christian Bale and Leonardo DiCaprio declined.

The Steve Jobs movie is being directed by Danny Boyle and will also be featuring Kate Winslet as former Macintosh marketing boss Joanna Hoffman. Katherine Waterston plays Jobs' former girlfriend Chrisann Brennan and Michael Stuhlbarg plays one of the original Mac developers in the biopic.

There will be three actresses who play Jobs' daughter Lisa Brennan at various ages, Makenzie Moss, Ripley Sobo and Perla Haney-Jardine. Sarah Snook and Adam Shapiro are also among the cast.

The project was previously developed by Sony, but it was picked up by Universal after Sony put it in turnaround. The movie will follow Jobs around three production announcements, the original Mac, NEXT computer and the Apple iMac.

Universal says production is currently underway in San Francisco. A few days ago, the production crew drew crowds when filming in Berkeley.
