AllThingsD cites comScore stating that the Facebook owned Instagram had an average of 7.3 million daily active users compared to Twitter's 6.9 million users. This feat is very important for Instagram as well as Facebook, given the growing focus on mobile and it also shows that Instagram is not losing any momentum.
After the Facebook's $1 billion acquisition of Instagram, there were a lot of question on the valuation of this image-sharing app, but it seems it is not going to disappoint the social giant.
comScore further claims that Instagram users spent 257 minutes using the app while the average Twitter user spent just 170 minutes on the app or mobile site.
These numbers certainly represent better engagement levels for Instagram, given it only has 22 million in US, on the other hand Twitter has over 29 million users.
These levels of user engagement and retention are both good and bad for Facebook, given Facebook is dealing with mobile issues and recently dumped HTML 5 for native app experience. These numbers certainly paint a mobile-focussed future and Paulo Alto-based company will have to get its act right.
However, Facebook also now holds an ace in the form of Instagram and it will have to find a way to effectively monetise the photo-sharing app and its own mobile experience.
Twitter on the other hand, seems to have figured out the monetisation of its mobile sites and apps with paid and promoted tweets - or so it claims, given we haven't seen any real numbers backing the claim.
The micro-blogging website will also have to take a lesson from these numbers and will have figure out increase the user-engagement, given that the barely-two-year-old Instagram has left it behind in such a short period of time.
