Highlights
  • The GFX 50S sports a 51.4-megapixel medium format sensor
  • The new 'G-mount' gets a new set of zoom and prime GF lenses
  • The camera is expected to launch early next year

Fujifilm medium format film cameras were pretty popular back in the day and now, it’s finally taken the step towards medium format digital cameras. The GFX 50S will be the company’s first camera in this segment and is currently in development with an estimated ‘early 2017’ release schedule. While there’s no word on pricing, we should expect it to cost around $10,000 (approximately Rs. 6,70,300), similar to Hasselblad’s X1D which was announced a couple of months back .

The camera features a new 51.4-megapixel medium format sensor which can be adapted to different aspect ratios, just like its film cameras. Powering the camera is the company’s X-Processor Pro imaging processor. The Fujifilm GFX 50S will also use a new ‘G-mount’ system, which means there’s a new lineup of zoom and prime lenses that will launch alongside the camera.

The initial line of lenses include GF63mmF2.8 R WR (equivalent to 50mm) standard prime lens; GF32-64mmF4 R LM WR (equivalent to 25-51mm) wide-angle zoom lens; GF120mmF4 Macro R LM OIS WR (equivalent to 95mm) mid-telephoto macro lens; GF110mmF2 R LM WR (equivalent to 87mm) which is similar to the previous one but with wider aperture; GF23mmF4 R LM WR (equivalent to 18mm) ultra-wide lens; and GF45mmF2.8 R WR (equivalent to 35mm) wide angle lens.

Other special features of the Fujifilm GFX 50S includes a detachable EVF which can be swapped for an external monitor or simply making the camera lighter. An optional adapter will also allow you to fit the EVF at an angle for more flexibility while shooting. The camera is also weather proof and can withstand temperatures as low as -10 degrees Celius.

We’ll most likely be hearing about more details about the Fujifilm GFX 50S camera and availability at next year’s CES.
