Zoe (Lily James) is a young documentary filmmaker raised by her English divorcé mother (Emma Thompson). At the same time, Kazim (Shazad Latif) is a doctor who lives with his Pakistan-born parents. Zoe and Kazim grew up as neighbours, and are childhood friends.
Zoe, who has experienced only bad dates and funny anecdotes, is amazed by Kazim's decision to accept an arranged marriage with a bright and beautiful bride from Pakistan, following in his parent's footsteps. Kaz’s decision perplexes Zoe — and provides her with a brilliant premise for her next documentary.
As Zoe embarks on a hopeful journey that slides from London to Lahore, in which her friend is all set to marry a stranger chosen by his parents, she wonders if she could learn something from a different approach to finding love.
