Speaking at the New York unveiling of the new flagship HTC One (M8), HTC CEO and co-founder Peter Chou said that the company is holding out hopes of gaining between an 8 to 10 percent of the global smartphone market share "in the long term", as reported by the China Post. Chou also revealed the company's plans to launch wearable devices, and a new tablet.

From the research firm Gartner's data, HTC owned less than 5 percent of the global smartphone market in 2013, and is far behind Samsung's 31 percent and Apple's 16 percent. Now with its new flagship, the HTC One (M8), the company is hoping to renew its fortunes. The company has already made an effort to overcome the losses with recently introduced affordable phones in its Desire series.

Despite the recent performance of the Desire series, Chou still calls gaining market share is "a critical issue" as the company shifts to focus its resources in key markets, especially the United States, Europe and China.

He also confirmed that HTC is developing new tablet (which might be the rumoured 8.9-inch Google Nexus tablet) and wearable computing products and will launch them "at the appropriate time." He didn't shed more light on to what exactly is in pipeline. But it is rumoured that HTC is in talks with Google for its next Nexus tablet and we could also see Android Wear-based smartwatch later this year.

Although HTC is hoping for the best and seems confident, many analysts share a different view. A few feel that HTC's strategy of adjusting its product portfolio will not be enough. The competition is fierce and it needs to be more competitive to do better against the rivals, especially lower-end smartphone market.
