  • Security patch has reportedly came first to unbranded devices
  • Update bumps up the firmware version to XXS1BPJ1
  • Update is expected to roll out gradually

Security patches for Android smartphones are increasingly becoming more important with vulnerabilities such as QuadRooter regularly exposed by security firms. Samsung has reportedly started pushing out the Android security patch for October with its latest update for Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge.

As per a report by Netherlands website Galaxy Club, the unbranded or off-contract devices in Europe have started receiving the update. Post the update, the firmware version is upgraded to XXS1BPJ1. As you would expect, the over-the-air update also carries bug fixes and is expected to roll out to other regions gradually.

In August, Check Point mobile research team reported the flaw 'QuadRooter', a set of four vulnerabilities affecting Android devices built on Qualcomm chipsets. The research team pointed out that even if one of these flaws is exploited, the hacker can gain root access to the users' device.

Even though the security updates that addressed the problems associated with QuadRooter were all pushed out by September, user security on Android devices has continued to remain a subject of scrutiny. Just recently, Chinese antivirus firm Cheetah Mobile reported that over 80-percent Android devices are still at risk of being infected by dated malware dubbed as 'Ghost Push'.
