Google is marking the 150th birth anniversary of Austrian painter Gustav Klimt with a doodle. The Google doodle shows The Kiss, perhaps Klmit's most famous piece of art.

Gustav Klimt painted The Kiss between 1907-08, at the highpoint of, what is considered, in more ways than one, his 'Golden Period', as most of Klimt's work during the time use Gold Leaf prominently.

The Kiss, the painting showcased in today's Google doodle, depicts a couple embracing, their bodies entwined in elaborately decorated robes. The Kiss is one of the rare paintings where the canvas is a perfect square, instead of a rectangle.

The work is composed of conventional oil paint with applied layers of gold leaf, an aspect that gives it its strikingly modern, yet evocative appearance.

The Kiss is exhibited in the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere museum in the Belvedere palace, Vienna, and is widely considered a masterpiece of the early modern period. It is one of the highlights of the city of Vienna, and is perhaps Gustav Klimt's most popular work.

Google's last doodle in India was on 23rd June, for Alan Turing, the World-War II code-breaker. Google had put up a very interesting doodle, which was a mock-up of Turing machine and users had to spell the word 'Google' in binary code to solve it.
