The demand for Google's newly launched 7-inch tablet, the Nexus 7 seems to have surpassed the search giant's expectations. The 16GB version of the Jelly Bean running device is out of stock at the Google Play store in the US and UK.

Google is still accepting orders for the 8GB version priced at $199. If users want to purchase the $249 version of the tablet, they are being asked to sign up for an e-mail notification when it is back in stock.

Just about a week ago, a message on the Google Play store stated that the 16GB model has been delayed by about two weeks. But now the store isn't taking any orders at all.

As per The Guardian's report, Google's planners had thought that buyers on the Google Play store, more than from physical or online retailers, would be more committed to the company's "cloud" concept and so would have more of their content stored online, rather than wanting to keep it on the device.

The publication also noted that the tablet had attracted a lot of demand since it was first announced at the Google I/O event in June. Though Google has not revealed any sales figures, a spokesperson for Dixons Retail said that the sales of the Nexus 7 have been "extremely brisk" but declined to say where it ranked against the Amazon's Kindle Touch and Apple's iPad.

The Nexus 7 is Google's first attempt into the tablet market. The device runs on Android Jelly bean and is powered by a Tegra 3 quad-core processor under the hood. It features a 1280x800 HD display and has 1GB RAM.
