  • The previous app size limit was 200MB
  • This has been raised to 4GB for Apple TV apps
  • This should improve first-launch experience for end users

Apple has issued a statement to all its developers that it has now increased the maximum size allowed for Apple TV apps. Previously, the Cupertino-based giant did not allow apps to be bigger than 200MB. However, that limit for tvOS apps has now been raised to a whopping 4GB.

The company has sent out instructions to developers that they will be able to ship bigger apps moving forward. Apple says, "The size limit of a tvOS app bundle has increased from 200 MB to 4 GB, so you can include more media in your submission and provide a complete, rich user experience upon installation. Also, tvOS apps can use On-Demand Resources to host up to 20 GB of additional content on the App Store."

The increased size will especially benefit game developers as they will be able to offer the entire game as a single download up-front, instead of the current practice of installing a small file and then downloading the rest of the assets at a later stage. The move will also improve customer experience as the complete game will be available to users as soon as the app is downloaded, doing away with wait times.

Larger apps would also let developers use higher resolution assets, which will be a treat for the eyes, especially on 4K TVs, where the current limit would have been an injustice.

Taking about 4K, some believe this could be a sign that a new Apple TV model with 4K support is coming soon. The current Apple TV only supports full-HD output.

Recently, Apple introduced the ability to install apps on an Apple TV directly from an iOS device or a computer running iTunes.
