Earlier in the year, Electronic Arts, maker of the popular FIFA series of football games, announced that the game would feature women's teams. However, it's not going to stop there. Australia's Steph Catley will be the first ever woman on the cover of FIFA, and will be seen alongside Lionel Messi on the cover of FIFA 16.

Last month, EA asked FIFA fans in Australia, France, Latin America, Mexico, and UK to vote for the local player they want on the cover of the game for their region. Each of these regions had a host of players to choose from.

For Australia, all candidates were from Catley's local football club, Matildas. They were Matildas' vice-captain Kyah Simon, AFC 2014 Women's Player of the Year Katrina Gorry, and of course Steph Catley. Over nine million football fans took part in the vote for their favourite stars. This is a world first for the global franchise.

"The in-game image looks so much like me - all the fine detail, the nose, the forehead and every little thing down to the headband, it's kind of perfect. It's quite scary actually," she told Four Four Two Australia.

"I think I'll definitely try and play myself - I think I've got to get that out of the way as a kind of out of body experience."

With one more player to be unveiled, the final Australian cover for FIFA 16 will be revealed on August 13.
