Highlights
  • Microsoft announced the cut in free storage to 5GB last year
  • The company is already offering 5GB free storage to new accounts
  • The cut will not apply for those who opted out before January 31

Microsoft has finally started reducing the free storage it offers OneDrive users from 15GB to 5GB. In addition to this, the company has also taken away the bonus storage it gave away for camera roll backup. However, if you opted-in for these give-aways before January 31 this year, you will be allowed to enjoy these storages as before.

If your OneDrive account has not yet reflected the change, it might very soon look different.

The Redmond-based company had first announced last year that it will reduce the free storage available on OneDrive but faced a severe backlash from its users. As a result, the company had to apologise to its customers and said that those who opt-in to keep the 15GB free storage and the bonus camera roll storage before January 31 would be allowed to keep them.

In April, the company sent out an email stating that the change will take place by July 27 this year. It also advised that it will be better for users to shift their important data elsewhere before the provided date.

Microsoft has already started applying the 5GB free storage limit on new accounts.

Another option available for users who are dejected by OneDrive's reduction is Google Drive, which provides you with 15GB of free storage when you sign up.

In April, Microsoft rolled out an update for OneDrive on iOS that allowed users to download multiple photos and videos at once instead of selecting individual pictures and saving them one-by-one. The company fixes some issues and also added 'shake to send' feedback feature with the update.
