Microsoft seems to have found a subtle way to make consumers upgrade to Windows 8 by not making the recently announced Office 2013 compatible with Windows XP and Vista.

The Redmond based Windows maker confirmed the new compatibility requirements on Office 2013 Preview Technet page. Consumers with computers running Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Windows Server 2012, will only be able to run Office 2013. (Also read: Top ten features in Office 2013)

With Windows XP still holding over 40 per cent of the market, Microsoft is trying everything to make the consumer move to more secure Windows 8, which is why it also released a comparably cheaper upgrade program for existing consumers. Windows XP, Vista and 7 users will be able to upgrade to Windows 8 for just $39.99.

Microsoft is hoping that the appeal of Office 2013 will prompt the old users to move away from Windows XP.

The hardware requirements for Microsoft Office 2013 include 1GHz processor, 1GB of RAM for the 32-bit version (2GB for the 64-bit version), 3GB of free hard disk space, and support for 1024 x 576 resolution.
