  • Microsoft expected to launch Surface Phones next year

One of Apple's major suppliers is reportedly getting ready with production trials of Microsoft's much-anticipated Surface phone. A China-based daily claims that Taiwan-based Pegatron will start trial production of Surface smartphone. Microsoft is rumoured to launch its Surface Phone in early 2017.

The report unfortunately doesn't get into specifics of the trial production of the Surface Phone. For those unaware, Taiwan's Pegatron is an Apple original design manufacturer (ODM). The report claims that Apple's order for iPhone accounts for nearly 60 percent of Pegatron's total sales.

Microsoft's Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella in a recent interview had assured the company's continued presence in the mobile space, he stated, "We will continue to be in the phone market not as defined by today's market leaders, but by what it is that we can uniquely do in what is the most ultimate mobile device."

The Redmond giant has been rumoured to be working three Surface models targeted at regular consumer, business user, and enthusiast categories. Unfortunately, there have been no details about what features would separate the smartphones in the specific categories. The Surface Phones for the different categories are expected to vary based on processor, storage, and other features. The three Surface phones are also rumoured to be priced in different tiers and meant for different markets.

A Microsoft executive earlier this year teased the Surface Phone saying that it will be a high-end version catering to the enterprise market and will be 'category innovating'.

Some reports have pointed that the delay in the launch of the Surface Phones has been caused due to developments in Windows 10 Mobile OS. Late last year, the Microsoft CMO tipped the company was developing a 'breakthrough' Surface Phone.
