Gone are the days when touch responsiveness was the biggest concern in a touchscreen smartphone. Now the smartphone generation has moved to bigger and better displays in terms of colour reproduction, accuracy, contrast ratio, viewing angles, and more.

A major player in display test kit manufacturing business - DisplayMate Technologies - has come out with a comprehensive report on the display of the South Korean smartphone manufacturer's latest flagship - the Samsung Galaxy S5. The company has declared that the new Samsung Galaxy S5 has "the best performing smartphone display that we have ever tested" based on its extensive lab tests.

Notably the Galaxy S5 features a 5.1-inch Super AMOLED display with a 1080x1920 pixel full-HD resolution. DisplayMate has detailed the long list of new records for the best Smartphone display performance by Galaxy S5. This includes "highest brightness, lowest reflectance, highest colour accuracy, infinite contrast ratio, highest contrast rating in ambient light, and smallest brightness variation with viewing angle."

DisplayMate says the AMOLED display on the Galaxy S5 performs better in outdoor lighting than any device it has yet tested. The Galaxy S5's display is said to be brighter than its predecessor the Galaxy S4's (by 22 percent) display, and the company's current flagship phablet, the Galaxy Note 3's (by 13 percent) display. It is the most accurate display ever tested on a smartphone or tablet when in Cinema mode, report added.

Not just the colour reproduction, saturation, accuracy, brightness and contrast ratio, the Galaxy S5 scores over S4 and others in display power efficiency as well.

"In fact, the Galaxy S5 is 27 percent more power efficient than the full-HD LCD smartphones we recently tested for mixed image content (that includes photos, videos, and movies, for example) with a typical 50 percent Average Picture Level, APL."

For a long time, Samsung's implementation of OLED technology couldn't excel because of oversaturated colours, but it looks like with the Galaxy S5 the South Korean giant is finally challenging the performance of other types of displays. DisplayMate will soon be releasing results of its Galaxy S5 shootout, giving us a more accurate picture of just where the Galaxy S5's display stands when compared to such smartphone luminaries as the Sony Xperia Z2, HTC One (M8), and the iPhone 5s.
