With Fortnite Season 5 comes a new Fortnite Battle Pass. It's how you earn new Fortnite skins and other cosmetic items such as emotes and special loading screens. There's also the Fortnite Battle Royale Battle Bundle. This includes access to the Battle Pass and automatically unlocks the next 25 tiers at a 40 percent discount. While Fortnite has been around for some time now, it's recently come to light how much revenue the game has been generating with the Fortnite Battle Pass and demand for new Fortnite skins being at the forefront. During this episode of Transition, we discuss if other big games such as the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops 4Battlefield V, and Red Dead Redemption 2 borrow Fortnite's monetisation methods such as the Fortnite Battle Pass.

And while Fortnite Battle Royale is free-to-play with micro-transactions such as the Fortnite Battle Pass, skins, and other assorted cosmetic additions, that hasn't stopped the likes of Activision and EA from borrowing its gameplay modes what with Black Ops 4 getting Blackout - Call of Duty's take on battle royale and Battlefield V getting its own version, simply called Royale. It's just a matter of time before we see big budget game makers mimic Epic Games' existing formula.

However, this could also see them use it in ways that are far from user-friendly. While Fortnite skins and other items are permanent unlocks, games like PUBG with its Event Pass only let you keep specific items for the duration of the event period. Others like Paladins have both a season pass and multiple battle passes. Coupled with government scrutiny over loot boxes, could push publishers to consider making more money from their games with a battle pass-like service. Could this end up being pay-to-win loot boxes in yet another form? All this and more in Transition, the Gadgets 360 gaming podcast.
