Acer is reportedly set to become the latest company to join the low cost tablet group. WSJ reports that the Taiwanese manufacturer plans to launch a $99 tablet that will be an addition to its Iconia range of tablets. Dubbed as the Iconia B1, the company is looking forward to an early 2013 release.

The report further states that the Iconia B1 is likely to be targeted at emerging markets such as China, Europe and South-East Asia.It also notes that the device has been sent for approval by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission, but it's unclear as of now if the tablet will be sold in the US.

The move comes in an attempt to challenge Apple and Google in the low cost tablet space. Google is rumoured to have a $99 Nexus tablet in the works for quite sometime now and it's possible to see the device make a debut at CES 2013.

The images of the tablet first cropped up on a Serbian forum and as far as specifications of the blue-edged tablet are concerned, the Iconia B1 is reported to have specs similar to the Kindle Fire and Nook Colour but priced more aggressively.

The tablet is likely to sport a 7-inch screen with a 1024x600 pixel display and powered by a 1.2GHz dual-core processor with 512MB RAM. It is expected to run on Android Jelly Bean.

Apart from the Iconia B1, citing "another person with direct knowledge of Acer's tablet products", the Journal mentions that the company is also planning to launch a less expensive version of its Intel-based Windows 8 tablets early next year, as its current offerings are "too pricey."
