It looks like Apple may also change the iPad mini colour variants to keep them consistent with the iPhone 5s.

A few days back, we were treated to images of a new 'Space Gray' iPad mini rear shell and now for the first time, alleged images of a Gold (Champagne) variant of the iPad mini have appeared online courtesy Sonny Dickson, who had previously shared accurate pictures of the new iPhone devices and their components, before the devices were launched.

The images were first posted on Chinese micro-blog Weibo, and offer a glimpse of the back-casing and the front of the alleged next-generation iPad mini Gold variant.

The back casing looks similar to that of the current generation iPad mini, complete with the speaker grill and lightning connector port, except that it's champagne gold in colour and features a similarly coloured Apple logo. The Gold colour was introduced with the new iPad 5s.

Interestingly, the front features a silver ring that surrounds the Home button indicating that the next generation iPad mini may feature the much talked about Touch ID fingerprint recognition feature which comes with the iPhone 5s. The front also features chamfered edges like the iPhone.

The Touch ID can be used to unlock the device, by simply placing a finger on the Home button. It can also be used to confirm purchases made on the App Store, iBookstore or the iTunes Store.

We wonder if Apple will also extend the Touch ID and the Gold colour to the next-generation iPad (iPad 5).

Dickson had also tweeted that the iPad Mini 2 will come in Space Gray, Gold and Silver colour variants.

Just a few days back, Dickson had posted a number of photos of the alleged next-generation iPad in the new 'Space Gray' and Silver colour.

It's worth noting that the first purported image of the next-generation iPad and the next-generation iPad mini featured a back that sported a Black and Slate finish similar to the one sported by the current-generation iPad mini. So it's possible that the decision to offer a 'Space Gray' and Gold version is a recent one. Apple could have taken the decision to maintain consistency with the new iPhone 5s colour variants.

Apple is expected to unveil new iPad tablets at an event in October, however, there's no official word from the company on the same.
