Over the last couple of days, there has been a lot of excitement about Netflix officially coming to India, but having looked at the offering, you might be better off getting a VPN and connecting to the US offering, particularly as the monthly subscription fee is not exactly cheaper in India.

To compare the offerings, we used a couple of different tools - Finder.com has prepared a list where it shows that 93 percent of the titles available on Netflix in the US are not available in India. Allflicks lets you see what's available on Netflix, and is showing 213 TV shows, and 522 movies and documentaries, a total of 735 titles. The US catalogue has 5,661 entries, so according to Allflicks, the India catalogue stands at roughly 13 percent of the US list, which is obviously higher than 7 percent that Finder.com estimates, but still not a great number.

Netflixable confirms this with its India list. In case you are wondering, the difference between the two could at least partially be explained by content that's available on Netflix India but not the US. Indeed, Finder.com also estimates that around 344 titles are available in India and not on Netflix US.

Here's a list of the 10 most popular shows on Netflix in the US:

  1. Narcos
  2. Atelier
  3. The Walking Dead
  4. Je Suis Charlie
  5. A Family Man
  6. Big Sky
  7. Sherlock
  8. House of Cards
  9. Breathe
  10. Marvel's Jessica Jones

Of the ten most popular titles on Netflix in the us according to Allflicks, only three - Narcos, Atelier, Marvel's Jessica Jones - were available on Netflix India at the time of writing, Incidentally, all of these are Netflix Originals. It would have been four, except that even the India rights for House of Cards are not currently with Netflix, although the company is trying to resolve at least this.

Shows owned by other companies, such as The Walking Dead (aired on Star) and Sherlock (aired on AXN) could take time to acquire as well, and this is one challenge Netflix will have to address quickly.

Quite a few popular movies available in Netflix USA are not available in India. Movies such as Kill Bill Vol. 1 and 2, The Hurt Locker, Pirates of the Carribean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, and classic blockbusters such as The Terminator are all on Netflix USA but not in India. The list, surprisingly, includes some Bollywood hits such as Singham, which isn't yet available on Netflix India but is on its US counterpart.
