Apple Music since its launch in June last year has become popular with users, with Apple in its latest earnings figures reporting a subscriber base of 13 million. It offers two plans, namely Individual and Family, similar to other popular music services. Apple has now added a third category that's exclusive to students and offers a 50 percent discount.

Under the new Student plan, users will be offered an individual membership at $4.99 per month compared to the existing Individual membership that's $9.99 per month. To recall, Apple Music's Family membership is priced at $14.99 per month and include up to six people.

The new membership is now available in Australia and New Zealand, and will be made available soon in Denmark, Germany, Ireland, the UK, and the US. Music Business Worldwide reports that Apple has tasked UNiDAYS, which is a student verification technology provider, to handle the Student plan. Students will have to be part of an eligible college or university. The plan is valid for up to four years, with the option to include study breaks in between.

The new Student plan will be available to users (students) for a period of four years following up the sign-up process.

Apple Music's Student plan will be available to both new as well as existing service subscribers. Those users who are eligible for the Student membership can change their plan from the website or from the Apple Music app.

Unfortunately, there is no word as of now whether the Student membership will be available to more countries including India. For those unaware, users in India can enjoy Apple Music at a cost of Rs. 120 per month for Individual membership while the family plan is available for just Rs. 190 after a 3 month free trial of the service.

Of course, this announcement comes soon after reports that the Cupertino giant will significantly overhaul Apple Music's interface, and unveil the refresh at WWDC this year in June.
