The popular photo-sharing service Instagram has just announced that more than 100 million people actively use its services every month. The company via its official blog has shared that it took around two and a half years to reach this mark.

Celebrating this landmark, Kevin Systrom, co-founder, Instagram said, "Images have the ability to connect people from all backgrounds, languages and cultures. For this reason, we feel extremely lucky to have the chance to build this with all of you. So from our team to the hundred million people who call Instagram home, we say thank you. Thank you for sharing your world and inspiring us all to do the same."

Instagram, along with Facebook and Angry Birds, was amongst the most downloaded apps of 2012 for smartphones and tablets. This application is available for iOS and Android users. The company has so far denied plans to develop any native app for the newly launched BlackBerry 10 operating system.

Recently, Instagram began letting the freshly launched webpages serve as a gallery for images taken by users of the smartphone photo-sharing service. Even on the website the users can "like" pictures and join online conversations about images.

Just last month, Instagram had shared that it is garnering 90 million active users in a month. It also indicated that users were sharing about 40 million photos per day. And in just about a month, the app has picked up an additional 10 million active users.

Instagram was acquired by the social networking site Facebook in 2012. The deal was valued at a whopping $1 billion. Prior to Facebook, even Twitter has tried to get their hands on the company but was unable to close the deal.
