Fleksy this week announced that it would expand its reach to more handsets by going free on both Android and iOS platforms. However, the popular keyboard app will continue its in-app purchases system.

"We want every smartphone user to have the opportunity to experience fast, expressive, and intuitive typing," said Fleksy Co-Founder and CEO, Kosta Eleftheriou on the company blog post. "We believe the best way to do this is to make the app free for everyone," he added.

The company also said that it would also be offering new themes and an extension slot worth $8 for free with the free-to-download version. Besides going free, the firm also announced the new Highlights feature. The feature will let users tap on the auto-recommended (Highlight) hashtag to show an integrated page of relevant content in the form of gifs, emoji, and stickers. This according to the company would prevent the effort made in manually searching for stickers and gifs on separate pages. The updated app is available from Google Play and the App Store.

Going free brings Fleksy in competition with another popular free keyboard app, SwiftKey. SwiftKey also features in-app purchases including different keyboard themes. SwiftKey last week expanded its Indian language support by adding layouts for nine more languages. The keyboard app already came with support for Hindi, Tamil, Gujarati, Marathi, and Nepali languages. It also supports adaptive layouts across all languages that use the Devanagari, Tamil, and Gujarati scripts. The new Fleksy Highlights feature also slightly resemble the emoji prediction feature introduced in SwiftKey earlier this year.
