Google has released its stock email app, obviously called Email, on Google Play. The redesigned Email app originally debuted with Android 4.4 KitKat and comes preloaded on the Nexus 5, and was updated on Wednesday.

The standalone email app sports nested folders, contact photos and better navigation. Notably, the Email app is currently available as an update or installation only on select devices [including the Nexus 5]. The app listing on the store notes that the HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S4 Play Edition devices are unable to receive the update.

By making the Email app available, Google has made it possible to issue more frequent updates to it, rather than issuing tricker system software updates for a wide range of devices. The app is now available on Google Play and it's a free download. The Email app listing on the store details some of the new features, which include increased security for Gmail accounts; easier account setup flow; printing support and other bug fixes.

Interestingly, Android Police notes (along with a signed APK) that the select device compatibility list is not limited to just Android 4.4 KitKat devices, though the exact list has not been revealed by Google.

In May, Google announced standalone offline document editing apps - Docs, Sheets, and Slides - for both Android and iOS platforms.

Earlier this week, Google brought a new feature to its desktop search results for businesses, letting users make Hangout voice calls to the primary phone number displayed in the search results. The phone number associated with a particular establishment would appear in big digits as a 'quick answer' when Google accurately returns the correct establishment in its search results. Users simply have to click on the number, and a Hangouts call would be initiated.

Recently, Google also started rolling-out its premium Google+ features to all its enterprise users (Google Apps), with noticeable changes to its Google+ and Hangouts apps.

Earlier the Google+ premium features were available as a preview that could be enabled by IT administrators. Now, new Google Apps customers will see these updates as they register, while the exiting users will see the updates in July.
