After launching an app for BlackBerry 10 smartphone users, IRCTC (Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation) has finally released its official Android app - called IRCTC Connect.

The official IRCTC Connect App can now be downloaded for free from Google Play India, and is about 12MB in size. The app is compatible with devices running Android 4.1 and above.

As per the app listing, the official IRCTC Connect app for Android, much like other platforms, allows users to book railway tickets, apart from checking reservation status, train schedules, train routes, availability of tickets, cancellation, booking history, recent history, favourites, and more.

The app listing notes, "Rail ticketing now made simpler just by swipe and shuffle, select and book. Install the newly launched IRCTC android app and book a railway ticket anywhere in India at your fingertips."

The IRCTC Connect app comes with features such as one step login for existing users; search and book train tickets; viewing and cancellation of tickets; retaining of recently added passenger details, and upcoming journey alerts. Notably, new users can register directly from the app. The IRCTC also has provided a user guide for new users that detail the use the app.

Back in August, IRCTC launched its official ticket booking app for BlackBerry 10 smartphone users. The IRCTC app was available for download on BlackBerry World under the Navigation & Travel section, and was a 5MB download.

We can say that an official Android app for IRCTC was long due considering that the company in collaboration with Microsoft released ticket booking apps exclusively for Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8 devices last year.
