LG Electronics on Tuesday announced that it will make its Knock Code feature available to more of its smartphones, via firmware update starting April.

The feature will soon be available on 'key LG smartphones' models, namely the LG G2 and G Flex. The Knock Code update will give users instant access to their smartphones via a customized "knock" pattern.

The Knock Code feature made its debut on LG G Pro 2 during MWC 2014, and is also available on G2 mini, F Series and L Series III.

The Knock Code feature is the further enhancement of the company's own KnockOn feature, which it had patented in 2008. LG says that the new Knock Code feature provides a higher layer of security and convenience to users over conventional password and pattern-based security options.

According to the company, the new Knock Code feature offers greater security as the pattern is entered on a blank screen using anywhere from two to eight taps, allowing for more than 80,000 possible combinations.

The Knock Code feature essentially divides smartphone's display into four invisible quadrants and allows users to both power on and unlock the LG smartphone by tapping a personalized pattern on the phone's screen.

In the announcement statement, Dr. Jong-seok Park, president and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company, said, "LG engineers placed a great amount of emphasis on providing users with exceptional security and convenience when developing Knock Code. Making Knock Code accessible to a wider audience is consistent with our direction to differentiate LG mobile devices on the basis of user experience."
