Saavn said it has developed the latest update in collaboration with Google's Android teams. Saavn had launched a revamped version of its iOS app in April, following which it said the number of overall unique users of the app rose by 10 percent. The company appears to be hoping for growth in India, where Android is the dominant smartphone operating system.
The Saavn 3.0 app for Android is currently listed on Google Play, and the listing notes other changes with version 3.0 of the app. The updated app is said to be fully-optimised for small screen devices, and feature improved functionality in low-connectivity environments. Users will now also see full-screen album art when playing songs.
Anurag Gupta, CTO and co-founder of Saavn, said, "India is an Android-driven market, and 70 percent of Saavn's listeners in India are on Android. We're excited to deliver the best possible user experience to the majority of our listener base with this new app. It's been carefully crafted to optimise the multiple screen experience, and to work seamlessly across a wide range of Android versions and hardware configurations."
Earlier in May, Saavn had announced a deal with music label T-Series to bring make over 133,000 songs available to users of Saavn's apps. Soundtracks of popular movies such as Aashiqui 2, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Chennai Express, Jab We Met, and 2 States; and from artistes like Yo Yo Honey Singh, Arijit Singh, Himesh Reshammiya and Adnan Sami, among others were made available on Saavn apps as part of the deal, the company had said.
Saavn's push to target India's Android users has been going on for a while. In March, the company had announced operator billing support for Airtel and Vodafone subscribers using Android smartphones.
Founded in 2006, Saavn says it has over 11 million monthly users worldwide. The app lets users stream music for free with advertising. It has a paid subscription tier called Saavn Pro, which lets users store songs offline and removes all ads, for Rs. 220 per month.
