Though E3, gamescom and other gaming events are still far way, you might be interested in Destination PlayStation, even if it's still for retailers.

Destination Playstation, Sony's annual event hosted by the Sony Computer Entertainment America has been announced and is scheduled from February 25-February 28 this year. Last year titles like LittleBigPlanet Karting and the next iteration of God of War were teased. Also it's where the existence of Sleeping Dogs (Review) was showcased, which later turned up at E3 as well.

We don't expect any major announcements from Sony until E3 later this year, but might see some highly anticipated PS3 exclusives like Beyond: Two Souls and The Last of US. Apart from these, we might get a second glimpse of other SCEA releases like God of War: Ascension and more casual titles such as Wonderbook's Diggs Nightcrawler and Walking With Dinosaurs.

But considering this is a retailer's event, could the next PlayStation console be shown off? Up until now, we've heard many rumours of Sony's next-gen console, the more recent one being associated with the company halting production of the PlayStation 2 in Japan. The rumours of "Orbis" began floating last year, which mentioned that the console will feature one of AMD's x64 processors plus discrete Radeon graphics.

Further, the PlayStation 4 is also said to be able to display a resolution of 4096X2160, and that it can play 3D games at 1080p. Gaming blog Kotaku also reported that select developers have been receiving development kits for the Playstation 4 since the beginning of last year.

The company's current generation console got an upgrade last year with a new slim model which makes it 20 percent smaller and about 25 percent lighter than the existing PlayStation 3 console. The 250GB and 500GB PlayStation 3 console variants debuted in the US for $249 and $299 respectively.

Also, for the first time, the new PlayStation 3 uses a sliding door panel to top load discs as opposed to the slot-loading disc drive. A noticeable change comes in the overall power consumption, which drops from 200W to 190W.

The fact of the matter is are all these changes hinting at the possible arrival of the PlayStation 4? It is doubtful whether to not we'll get a peek at the console so early on, but other details regarding pricing and availability may be possible.

Sony's rivals Microsoft and Nintendo aren't resting either. Nintendo has already launched the Wii U (Pictures) last year in the market though it's priced way above the PS3 and the Xbox 360 as well. Sony apparently sold more PS3 units compared to Nintendo's Wii U over the Black Friday week in November last year.

Microsoft's console however, continued to be the top selling console last year amidst a declining gaming market and sold 750,000 units during the holiday shopping season.

The software giant also has a next-gen console codenamed "Durango" in the works according to various leaks in the past.

We could see both Sony and Microsoft come up with their new consoles but not until the later half of the year. For now all eyes are on Sony to see what announcements it comes up with at the event.
